I hate having to resize windows in ubuntu. For those who have tried Divvy then you'll probably agree it is a godsend when it comes to windows size and position management on Windows or OSX. However, there is a much easier way to resize easily in Ubuntu then installing some third party software, and until recently I didn't know about it...

The Problem

Most people I've seen (nay, everyone I've seen) resizes their Ubuntu windows by aiming their pointer at some part of the edge of a window, holding down the left mouse button, and dragging the edge/s. The main problem with this is the absolute precision required to first attain that tiny edge. I often find that it takes me several attempts at waving my cursor around the edge before the cursor lands on the edge.

How do I Resize Without such Precision?

Simple! Next time you have a window such as a terminal in the foreground, try hitting the 'alt-space' combination. This little menu should appear in the top-left of the window:

Resize Options

From here, hit 'r' and you'll find that the cursor becomes a little "hand". From this point on its pretty easy to figure out what to do. Simply move your "hand" around the screen and the window will resize with your hand movements. No need to spend those extra seconds trying to attain a lock on the edge of that stupid window. Just hit these 2 shortcuts and you're ready to resize!

You can move it too!

Yes. Perform the 'alt-space' combo and hit 'm' instead of 'r' and the window will move with your cursor.

It's Brilliant

Yes, it is. It is a freken godsend without having to install any additional software.

Comments ...

If you don't like resizing windows, a tiling window manager can also be very useful. I use xmonad currently, and I used to use wmii. I love not having to worry about window sizing on a regular basis.
